One of my buddies at work might quit. I have mixed feelings on it, because I love her to death and she makes work so fun for me. But at the same time she's starting to affect my money.

Have you ever gone into a restaurant later at night, around 8:30ish, and noticed there's only a couple of servers running around? These are the closers. They are usually the best of the staff, able to handle 99% of the shit that's thrown at them. Once the dinner pop dies, servers are taken off the floor a few at a time, just in case a random pop happens, until eventually only the closers are left. Obviously the slower business is, the sooner everyone's taken off the floor because no job pays you to stand around and do nothing -- unless you're the closers on a bad night.

Managers gauge how they make cuts carefully. The main factor is the strength of those 2 closers. Can they handle a late pop? Will they freak out if we get one? If the answer to the last question is "yes," the less likely a manager is to take people off the floor quickly if it looks dead, which means as a closer you have less tables, sell less, and make less money.

This is where my buddy comes in. She's started freaking out over stuff. If something gets out of whack -- food doesn't go out right, people are being bitches and hoes, she can't get her bar drinks in a timely manner, etc. -- she freaks out. If we aren't getting a lot of tables she freaks out because she's not making enough money, and then when we do get tables she's in a bad mood and her tips suffer. She's not rude to them or anything, but they get the vibe. Or she takes more tables than she can really handle and her money suffers.

How does this affect me? (A) Putting up with her when she's like that isn't exactly fun. (B) If they're afraid she'll freak out, the managers won't cut as early as they should when she's working. My earnings are held hostage by her spazzage.

I've spazzed. Hardcore. Reference this entry for my all time worst. But I bounced back and apparently am on the list of Closers We Can Count On. She's not bouncing back. She was in tears tonight at how little money she made and was going on and on about how much she hated the place. Admittedly, she had some bad tables. The kind where no matter what you do you're only getting $2. But if this job's got her that messed up, she needs to go.

But I'll really miss her if she does. :(
